Bonita Applebum have just dropped their EP, The Genius Machine on Laskar Music/Empire Street. This exclusive digital release can be heard and copped here. In addition to playing showcases on the West Coast, the duo are currently preparing for performances at Winter Music Conference in Miami, March 2010.

Bonita Applebum
the1shanti and Shefali Kumar began working under the name Bonita Applebum in mid-2008. The primary goal of the project is to blend different genres into a compelling audio experience while maintaining a high degree of pop sensibility. In parallel, the duo have set out to record their project in remote locations using a minimal amount of equipment. Focusing on the usage of digital technology and portable recording devices, the pair concentrate on capturing ambient sounds in their recordings, live DJ sets, and performances.

Shefali
Shefali first gained exposure as a professional dancer and model in Cleveland. While keeping her education a priority, she was crowned Miss India North America, became a featured dancer in music videos for artists like Sizzla and Dru Hill, and landed a spot performing along side the world's most prominent DJs such as Tiesto and Paul Van Dyk. Her move to New York City and acceptance into NYU's Masters of Music Technology program led to the launch of her career as a singer, songwriter, and producer. She began collaborating with electronic dj/ producers around the US, and soon after, crossed paths with Chicago's Barrington Lawrence. Their first track "Eclipsing the Sun" caught the attention of the legendary Paul Oakenfold, who released the single EP on his label, Perfecto Records. The "Eclipsing the Sun (Barry Jay Remix)" was selected for Thrive Records' cd release of "Oakenfold: Perfecto Vegas," which topped the iTunes Dance and Amazon mp3 Album charts. Following the release, Big Management signed Shefali and put her in front of veteran producer Rod Carrillo. The two completed the rock anthem "Here We Come", and epic house track "Faceless" (fall 2009). As with her dancing endeavors which span from flamenco to hip hop, Shefali's creativity in music is diverse.

Nathan "the1shanti" Laskar, or simply Shanti, resides in Brooklyn New York, where he operates his studio and works with artists, labels and agencies. He has produced award winning work which integrates the audio, visual and live event experience with new technology. As a producer, songwriter, and emcee, Shanti has released music through Universal, Sony, Rawkus and a wide varitey of independent labels, including his own. Highlights include his collaborations with electronic outfit, the Dum Dum Project, working with Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin and Wood) and ElekTro4, collaborating with A.R. Rahman and Andrew Lloyd Webber, and much more. In 2006, Afrika Bambaataa honored Shanti with the title of "Indian Bambaataa" for his pioneering spirit, work as a left field hip-hop artist and drive to continue in the tradition of the Native Tongues.

	So Easy We recorded bits of this track at Chelsea Market. Interesting enough, five-0 was thick so the jig was up fairly quick due to all of the closed circuit cameras in the location. Thankfully, we grabbed enough to do something with it and take the song a littler further. It's still unfinished. Shefali was being pulled in a few directions about love, and when she told me about it the song wrote itself. NL
	Why Can't Love We wanted to sneak in to a cabana in the basement spa at the Gansevoort to track vocals. The colors and waterfalls are luxurious. It was a no-go so we hit the penthouse bar and pool instead. Regarding the lyrics, I'm super idealistic about love. So is Shefali. Felt like I was channeling her thoughts when I wrote it. NL
	What You Want Every time I have Oreo milkshakes in a classic NY diner, I feel like writing guitar pop with synth strings. The strings in this are actually recorded live and chopped up, but I think I hit the guitar pop part on the nose. The lyrics were freestyled into the mic on the spot. The red DJ booth in the aqua tinted basement of the Highline set the tone. If you ever have a chance to see the spot when lit up and the water flowing, it's beautiful. The piece is still unfinished.
